IT Job News – Slow Growth For IT Salaries

As the recovery struggles to take wing, IT salaries in 2010 are rising just slightly over last year’s. At the same time, a number of benefits are on the decline. Some benefits, though, such as flex-work schedules, are increasing in popularity as employers attempt to keep valuable IT staffers, according to a new survey from Janco.

IT Security – Gartner: IT security spending to remain steady, but not a top CIO priority

A top research firm predicts that IT security spending will remain steady through 2011 with identity management as the top focus, but also suggests that CIOs still don’t rank security projects among their high-priority initiatives.

Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner Inc. will announce Thursday that during the next 12 months, it expects that enterprises will spend approximately 5% of their total IT budgets on information security technology. While that percentage is down slightly from 6% last year, Gartner forecasts that overall IT budgets will increase by nearly 2%, meaning security spending will largely hold its ground.

My concern is this treading water… spending the same amount as last year, and hoping they attack someone else.
Mark Kadrich
President and CEO, The Security Consortium

Gartner this week is previewing its latest security spending data — compiled via a host of recent research efforts — in advance of its Security and Risk Management Summit, which takes place near Washington D.C. June 21-23.

Job Tips and Job News – 5 Ways to Shine in Your Next Interview

By Beth Braccio Hering, CareerBuilder Writer

In a tough job market, landing an interview is a major accomplishment. When such opportunity knocks, be ready to show why you’re the candidate to hire. Here are five tips that can help job seekers make a great impression.

Do your homework

Erika Milonas, director of campus recruitment for The McTigue Financial Group (part of Northwestern Mutual) in Chicago reviews more than 1,000 résumés a year and interviews about 400 candidates to choose 40 for the company’s internship program. With such competition, it would seem that interviewees would be incredibly prepared, but that isn’t always the case.

Milonas finds some candidates unable to answer the simple question, "What do you know about The McTigue Financial Group and Northwestern Mutual?" She calls failure to be able to discuss the company at this basic level a "deal breaker," regardless of how the rest of the interview went.

Since most businesses have websites, learning about a potential employer is relatively easy. Find out what the company does and its main products/services, and be familiar with recent developments in the industry.

Job Tips and Job News – Projected Increase in Hiring

The Robert Half Professional Employment Report projects a 3% increase in hiring for the third quarter.  It’s obviously not tremendous growth, but it is movement in the right direction.

Overall, a net 3% (6% increase, 3% decrease) of surveyed executives said they plan to increase the number of full-time employees in professional occupations in the third quarter.

This is down slightly from the prior quarter’s forecast but continues a trend of hiring outpacing staff reductions.  Transportation and business services projected the most growth, while the legal field had the strongest hiring activity projections. New England was the regional leader.

Job News – Dallas Business Journal – Jobs report optimistic, but falls short

The United States had 3.1 million job openings on the last business day of April 2010, up about 34.8 percent from July of 2009 when job openings hit a trough, the U.S. Department of Labor said Tuesday.

The labor department’s latest report indicates that in July of 2009, the U.S. hit a low point with only 2.3 million job openings. Since then, the workforce has added 740,000 more jobs.

However, the job hire rate and separation rates have remained relatively steady at 3.3 percent and 3.1 percent, respectively, the report said.

IT Job News – The quest for IT talent

That noise you hear is the scrape of chairs being pushed back, laptops snapping shut and your ICT staff walking out the door. The war for talent is on again — if it ever stopped — and as with all wars, there will be victors, survivors and casualties.

Identifying, retaining and developing talent never gets easier. There are only degrees of difficulty. What should you do to attract and groom good people? How can you make your IT organisation one that offers interesting roles and compelling career prospects? How can you avoid becoming collateral damage in the war?

How much it really costs to replace staff

The market is on the move

Now, even worse news.

Peoplebank is Australia’s largest IT&T recruitment company. It claims a talent pool of more than 300,000 candidates and 3000 contractors on-site, and places 6000 candidates every year.

Peoplebank’s National IT Market Update: April 2010 reveals significant salary increases — the first sign of increased competition among employers for IT skills — are beginning to emerge. It supports anecdotal evidence of shrinking talent pools around the country.

Information Technology – In praise of unsung IT heroes!

Next time an IT person helps you out, or even listens to your whining without complaint, offer to take that person to lunch. Or, at least, say thank you and really mean it.

Gawd, it’s so easy to be negative, which is why an article praising the efforts of unsung IT heroes caught my attention.

The message is simple, short, and sweet: despite all the project failures, legions of IT workers do a great job every day. They suffer the sins, inexperience, and bad attitudes of non-technical colleagues who act like IT people are their personal servants.

IT Staffing – Increased IT Hiring on Horizon, Survey Suggests

Although companies such as HP may be slashing their workforce, a survey finds the majority of HR heads are planning on making IT hires in the next six months.

Although companies such as HP may be slashing their workforce, a survey finds the majority of HR heads are planning on making IT hires in the next six months.

More than three-quarters (78 percent) of human resources managers or recruiters who have responsibility in recruiting technology positions are looking to hire IT workers in the next six months, according to the 2010 IT Hire Intelligence Survey conducted by Monster.com, an online career and recruitment resource on behalf of technology services provider Technisource. In addition, the majority of survey respondents said they are confident that their company’s performance will improve across the same time period.

Among the key findings, 76 percent of respondents have confidence that their company’s performance will improve in the next six months, while 78 percent of respondents plan to hire IT staff in the next six months. When asked what technology-oriented positions IT hiring managers were looking to fill, applications and infrastructure positions took the lead.

Job Tips and Job News – The Power of Headhunters

When seeking jobs, having the support of a headhunter or recruiting firm can be an asset. Although most jobs nowadays are sourced through networking, recruiters are the second most important source for companies to find valuable employees.

What can a recruiter do for you and for your job search? When we think of the effects of networking, and how they affect job search, a recruiter presents similarities with a different edge. Establishing relationships with people and connecting one-on-one has been demonstrated as an important step to find opportunities. In that same manner, a headhunter will focus on learning all regarding your profile, and when identifying a fit with the position, will become a promoter of your candidacy within a firm. There is a lot to say about someone marketing your services. It is a great advantage to have someone on your side, talking well about your skills, career progress and how you can become an asset for a firm.

Well-established recruiters manage relationships on a daily basis. When becoming respected professionals, their endorsement is a great tool to count with. Thus, it is important for candidates to understand that the image projected to a recruiter is as important as the one projected for an employer.
