Job Tips and Job News – IT Spending Recovers After Recession, IDC Says

IDC is predicting that worldwide IT spending will jump 3.8 percent this year, to $1.47 trillion, after a recession-plagued 2009. Hardware makers will be the big winners, with spending on PCs, servers, storage and networking gear expected to soar. However, there are some areas of weakness, in particular in Western Europe and Japan, IDC said.

IT spending is rebounding in the wake of the global recession, with businesses spending on everything from PCs and servers to storage devices and networking equipment, according to market research firm IDC.

In numbers released May 24, IDC is estimating that worldwide IT spending will grow 3.8 percent this year, to $1.47 trillion.

Hardware vendors will be the biggest winners, with spending jumping 6.4 percent, followed by software at 3.1 percent and services at 1.5 percent.

Job Tips and Job News – Certifications Are a Stop on the Road to IT Licensing

My column "Certifications Are No Longer Optional" generated emotional responses on both sides of the issue, split roughly 50-50. I agree that certs aren’t worthwhile if you’re well respected within your company, close to retirement or employed by a company that doesn’t value certification. But if you might change jobs in the next few years (voluntarily or not), certifications will strengthen your résumé.

And certs’ relevance goes beyond that. They are the first step toward licensing IT professionals.

Many disciplines have established licensing procedures. Anyone working in those fields who lacks a license is severely restricted in what he can do. For example, accountants can offer tax preparation and bookkeeping services, but only CPAs can audit and certify a company’s books.

Job Tips and Job News – Texas added 32,500 jobs in April

Dallas Business Journal – by Kerri Panchuk Web Reporter

Keeping its status as one of the states least impacted by the recession, Texas added 32,500 jobs in the month of April, the Texas Workforce Commission said Friday.

Since the beginning of 2010, the Lone Star State has produced 79,000 jobs, TWC said. Overall, Texas has 11.2 million employed workers after the first five months of the new year.

However, even with new jobs in the pipeline, the state’s unemployment rate grew a percentage point in April, reaching 8.3 percent, compared to 8.2 percent in March.

However, the state still trends below the national unemployment rate of 9.9 percent.

Job Tips and Job News – Systems engineers, from engineering students to experienced professionals, are expected to have strong salaries and real opportunities for career growth.

Systems engineers, from engineering students to experienced professionals, are expected to have strong salaries and real opportunities for career growth. They also have the weight of academia and major technology vendor IBM behind them.

You may not have noticed, but systems engineering is a promising career choice. In 2009, it was rated No. 1 out of the Top 50 careers in terms of salary and growth prospects over the next 10 years by CNNMoney.com and Payscale.com.

Right now in May 2010, the average wage for a systems engineer is just under $90,000, according to data compiled by Indeed.com. While average salaries for the field are down a bit from where they had been, there is little shortage of jobs in the field.

Why is that? Well, probably because of the complexity and demands of the job. The main focus of systems engineering is understanding compatibility and offering agnostic views of technology while being able to design high-performing, yet efficient systems across most (if not all) technology layers. Plus, systems engineers have to have a deep understanding of best-of-breed technologies while staying up-to-date on emerging technology trends.

Job Tips and Job News – Cloud apps adoption can create IT staff unrest

IT professionals may worry about losing their jobs when on-premise systems are replaced with SaaS

CIOs and IT managers know they must address concerns like security, compliance, service levels and end-user resistance when moving to cloud-based enterprise software, but they must not overlook a critical area: the feelings of their IT staffers.

When companies decide to unplug on-premise servers, ditch the applications housed on them and adopt vendor-hosted software in the cloud, the IT staffers in charge of supporting and maintaining those discarded in-house systems are bound to get nervous.

Tired of searching endlessly through online job boards and employment Web sites hoping to find a position that matches your background and criteria? I think it’s time to take matters into your own hands. One of my colleagues was kind enough to pass along a YouTube video called The Google Job Experiment. I watched the one-minute video and thought it was ingenious! Here’s the link in case you haven’t seen it yet: .

Talk about “thinking outside the box” to get the job you want! I have a feeling it’s going to catch on; all of a sudden, we’re going to start seeing ads, springing up everywhere, targeted at well-positioned executives and hiring managers saying, “Hire me”. The concept itself to me is inspiring and creative, and had me thinking…

Well, for those of us who may not be as creative and “outside the box” as others, I’ve put together a list of tips on how to get started:
