Information Technology – In praise of unsung IT heroes!

Next time an IT person helps you out, or even listens to your whining without complaint, offer to take that person to lunch. Or, at least, say thank you and really mean it.

Gawd, it’s so easy to be negative, which is why an article praising the efforts of unsung IT heroes caught my attention.

The message is simple, short, and sweet: despite all the project failures, legions of IT workers do a great job every day. They suffer the sins, inexperience, and bad attitudes of non-technical colleagues who act like IT people are their personal servants.

Job Tips and Job News – Cloud computing momentum: What it means for CIOs and IT departments

Cloud computing has gone from being scoffed at by CIOs to being one of the top two CIO concerns of 2010. TechRepublic and ZDNet recently did a Webcast in which ZDNet Editor in Chief Larry Dignan and I discussed the full range of issues that IT leaders face when considering if and how to implement cloud computing.

Some of specific topics included:

  • The different flavors of cloud computing
  • Security concerns
  • Compliance with the cloud
  • Cloud-washing
  • Private cloud vs. public cloud
  • Bringing legacy code to the cloud
  • How the cloud will affect IT jobs

IT Staffing – Increased IT Hiring on Horizon, Survey Suggests

Although companies such as HP may be slashing their workforce, a survey finds the majority of HR heads are planning on making IT hires in the next six months.

Although companies such as HP may be slashing their workforce, a survey finds the majority of HR heads are planning on making IT hires in the next six months.

More than three-quarters (78 percent) of human resources managers or recruiters who have responsibility in recruiting technology positions are looking to hire IT workers in the next six months, according to the 2010 IT Hire Intelligence Survey conducted by Monster.com, an online career and recruitment resource on behalf of technology services provider Technisource. In addition, the majority of survey respondents said they are confident that their company’s performance will improve across the same time period.

Among the key findings, 76 percent of respondents have confidence that their company’s performance will improve in the next six months, while 78 percent of respondents plan to hire IT staff in the next six months. When asked what technology-oriented positions IT hiring managers were looking to fill, applications and infrastructure positions took the lead.

Job Tips and Job News – Forrester’s IT Forum: Business Technology (BT) Will Be Driven By CEO-CIO Partnership

Many future chief executive officers (CEOs) will come from the ranks of 21st century business-minded chief information officers, Xerox Chairman and CEO Ursula Burns told more than 1,100 attendees at Forrester’s IT Forum, Forrester’s flagship IT event spanning 12 roles across IT and technology marketing professionals.

Burns was among the senior business leaders — including CIOs from JetBlue, Nike, Sony, and Starbucks — that demonstrated how technology can transform the business.

“For too long, the emphasis in information technology has been on the technology — the latest and the greatest — with all too little attention on the information our businesses need to run more efficiently and effectively,” Burns said. “Forrester has taken the notion one huge step forward — putting the emphasis not on information but on business.”

George F. Colony, Forrester’s chairman and CEO, told the audience that the CEO is essential to the success of business technology (BT). For BT to succeed, according to Colony, the CEO must provide a clear high-level direction for the company, be a catalyst for bringing the business and technology together, and keep business and technology focused on strategic initiatives that drive the business forward. For their part, it is essential that CIOs be proactive, bring best practices and develop a point of view on priorities.

Job Tips and Job News – The Power of Headhunters

When seeking jobs, having the support of a headhunter or recruiting firm can be an asset. Although most jobs nowadays are sourced through networking, recruiters are the second most important source for companies to find valuable employees.

What can a recruiter do for you and for your job search? When we think of the effects of networking, and how they affect job search, a recruiter presents similarities with a different edge. Establishing relationships with people and connecting one-on-one has been demonstrated as an important step to find opportunities. In that same manner, a headhunter will focus on learning all regarding your profile, and when identifying a fit with the position, will become a promoter of your candidacy within a firm. There is a lot to say about someone marketing your services. It is a great advantage to have someone on your side, talking well about your skills, career progress and how you can become an asset for a firm.

Well-established recruiters manage relationships on a daily basis. When becoming respected professionals, their endorsement is a great tool to count with. Thus, it is important for candidates to understand that the image projected to a recruiter is as important as the one projected for an employer.

Job Tips and Job News – A basic lesson from IT industry to British Petroleum (BP)

BP at the moment has one of the world’s largest projects in hand to seal up the leak gushing oil out at an alarming rate. When you look at the timeline of the BPs project plan it seems they are following what we call a Waterfall method where each phase is implemented on a sequential order.

In IT we use what is referred to as Rational Unified Process (RUP) where different phases are staggered and overlapped with one another, reducing the lead time between deployments. If BP could follow this methodology, may be they can save more time in between deploying different alternatives to stop the leak. BP’s actual timeline is as follows;

April 22nd – the Deep Water Horizon rig sank and a 5 mile oil slick was seen

May 7th – lowering 100-ton containment chamber to cap the leak failed

May 16th – Successfully inserted a tube in to the leaking well to capture some oil

May 27th – the ‘top kill’ failed to plug the oil leak

June 2nd – deployment of the lower marine riser package (LMRP) is pending

Job Tips and Job News – For CIOs, now an IT Cost calculator from HP

HP Financial Solution Analysis develops data for CFOs and CIOs to use in evaluating the merits of competing IT investment approaches and methodologies

NEW DELHI, INDIA: HP today announced a customized HP Financial Solution Analysis for enterprise clients to analyze both direct and indirect costs associated with IT solutions.

The information is used to help clients make better financial decisions and gain maximum value from their IT investment strategies.

Offered through HP Financial Services, the company’s leasing and life cycle asset management services division, HP Financial Solution Analysis develops data for chief financial officers (CFOs) and chief information officers (CIOs) to use in evaluating the merits of competing IT investment approaches and methodologies.

To accomplish this, the solution analyzes the full spectrum of costs related to a client’s IT investment, including expenses for hardware, software, maintenance, training, energy (power and cooling), applications development, downtime and end-of-life disposition.

“Organizations need to remove the guesswork from how their capital dollars can be most effectively invested,” said Arindam Chandra, Country Manager, HP Financial Services, HP India. “Working with HP, clients gain valuable insights into refocusing IT investments to support innovation and business growth, versus investing in the operations of an aging infrastructure.”

Career Turning Points: Keep IT All About the Users

A chance elective in college brought Jackie Lucas into IT, but a passion for people led her to become a CIO.

Now VP and CIO of Baptist Healthcare System, Lucas has always had a business perspective on technology. While she fell in love with computers during a freshman class, she had entered college on an accounting scholarship and couldn’t abandon that field without leaving school. Determined not to give up her new dream, she took as many data processing classes as she could fit into her schedule over the next four years and sought out a job where she could apply both of her skills.

She ended up at a hospital in Tennessee, reporting to the vice president of nursing who had oversight of both financial and IT. There, she discovered a new passion—delivering service to patients, physicians and caregivers. Looking to move up and better serve that mission, she went back to school for her MBA. Even though she was still fascinated by technology and its potential for improving processes and service, she stayed in administration—in part because she couldn’t imagine being part of the hospital’s enterprise IT group, which was entirely focused on maintaining technology and had nothing to do with users.

Job Tips and Job News – IT Resume Writing Do’s

When it comes to any resume, you need to make sure that you are doing it right. Fatal mistakes can be made on a resume, and those mistakes can cause you to lose the chance to obtain the position you were going for. Before you rush into writing your IT resume, it is important to know what you should and shouldn’t do. That way you avoid those mistakes that others make. We will start with the things that you SHOULD do!

IT Resume Do’s

– Font Size: You should choose a good font size, and many people go with Times New Roman for its readability. Remember that your resume needs to get its point across, and it needs to do it fast. Giving your potential employer the ability to quickly read your resume is definitely a plus.

– Bullet Points
: Another part of getting the point across quickly is to provide bullet points. These will be short, to the point, and they will show the potential employer exactly what you are capable of. Many people use these today rather than paragraphs because the majority of employers will not take the time to read a paragraph.

– Neatness: Making your IT resume neat is paramount to your success. You need to have the information organized properly and you need to make it very clear. If the employer cannot make heads or tails of your resume, he or she probably will not consider you for the position.
