Job Tips and Job News – A basic lesson from IT industry to British Petroleum (BP)

BP at the moment has one of the world’s largest projects in hand to seal up the leak gushing oil out at an alarming rate. When you look at the timeline of the BPs project plan it seems they are following what we call a Waterfall method where each phase is implemented on a sequential order.

In IT we use what is referred to as Rational Unified Process (RUP) where different phases are staggered and overlapped with one another, reducing the lead time between deployments. If BP could follow this methodology, may be they can save more time in between deploying different alternatives to stop the leak. BP’s actual timeline is as follows;

April 22nd – the Deep Water Horizon rig sank and a 5 mile oil slick was seen

May 7th – lowering 100-ton containment chamber to cap the leak failed

May 16th – Successfully inserted a tube in to the leaking well to capture some oil

May 27th – the ‘top kill’ failed to plug the oil leak

June 2nd – deployment of the lower marine riser package (LMRP) is pending
