Sr. Network Engineer

The Position

The Senior Network Engineer will be the hands-on subject matter expert (SME) responsible for architecting, implementing, monitoring and maintaining all company networks and network equipment.   We have adopted a Cisco networking standard for all switch, router, and firewall hardware and as such we need someone with deep hands-on practical Cisco networking experience.  Our wide area network (WAN) consists of 106 sites across the United States, Canada, and Mexico with a mixture of MPLS and VPN (IPSEC) tunneled connections.  A network redesign effort is underway to migrate to Fortinet SDWAN from the current MPLS design.

  • Be a great troubleshooter and committed to a production support mindset.  The ability to properly and thoroughly troubleshoot technical issues through to resolution independently is of great value and necessary in this position.

Responsibilities


Responsibilities and Skills Required

  •  Provide primary support for the corporate WAN/LAN/WLAN environment.
  • Experience with SDWAN technologies both from an implementation and support standpoint.
  • A firm understanding of Network Access Control (NAC) policies and implementation strategies.  Experience configuring and implementing ForeScout is a huge plus.
  • Experience managing load balancing technologies, with a strong emphasis on F5.
  • Deep experience with Cisco Wireless Controllers (on-premises) and wireless networking best practices.  Ability to design, implement, configure, and manage wireless networking configurations, preferably in a manufacturing setting.
  • Understanding of virtual networking methodologies (VMWare) is highly desired.
  • Update the existing network architecture to include industry standard security practices.
  • Monitors network and system performance, recommends and implements adjustments upon approval.
  • Implements system and network changes in a controlled manner; will adhere to company change control policies.
  • Responsible for both the internal and external security of the company’s information systems
  • Must be able to identify, initiate and influence changes to the company’s network and security profile, structure, and performance and protection as needed to ensure safety of assets and resources
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of company networks
  • Responsible for enterprise core networking design, support and maintenance for Cisco Routing, Firewall and Switching at multiple locations
  • Responsible for enterprise WAN networking with experience in MPLS and ability to evaluate and work with carriers to finalize network solutions.
  • Perform troubleshooting, using a consistent methodology and tools to diagnose network issues
  • Maintain IP scheme and manage DHCP scopes and DNS records.  Experience with an enterprise DDI management platform is highly preferred.  We currently utilize Efficient IP in-house.
  • Expert knowledge of firewall management, access list control and NAT preferably with Cisco Firepower appliances.
  • Ability to upgrade and patch firmware on network infrastructure as necessary
  • Participate as a key SME with disaster recovery planning and testing
  • Documents network and system diagrams, and process flow diagrams.
  • It is an essential function of this job to show up on time and be ready to work your regularly scheduled hours.

Qualifications

  • A strong background with Cisco networking is an absolute requirement for this position.
  • Five to Ten years of experience in a large-scale networking environment consisting of 100+ nodes.  
  • Five to Ten years of experience managing Cisco hardware components, with high marks for experience with Cisco Firepower, wireless controllers, switches (including Nexus 7K and 9K), and routers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or equivalent; or six years related experience in LAN/WAN networking environments.
  • Industry certifications are a big plus, but practical industry experience trumps all.  We want a seasoned professional who’s been in the trenches and understands the technology impact on business processes and drives towards business success.

    JOB TITLESENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER

     

    REPORTS TO:  Systems Architect

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    This role is part of the IT Infrastructure Team in the Network and Telecommunications Group. The role will include (but is not limited to) engineering, deploying and configuring network systems. This position is an integral part of enterprise network design, bringing industry best practice to the engineering process. It requires a high level of technical aptitude to address network problems and discuss solutions with a technical and/or executive audience. The Senior Network Engineer will ensure a stable and secure networking environment for our client and its affiliates. You will own and resolve network-related incidents and requests within SLA’s as the last level of support during outages or equipment issues. Managing the company’s core network infrastructure, as well as supporting initiatives related to network and telecommunications, will be part of daily tasks. The ideal candidate will have a solid technical background across multiple network vendor solutions as well as exceptional communication and organizational skills. The Senior Network Engineer will be honest, accurate and professional in all their daily interactions with team members, business partners and residents. They will treat everyone with dignity and respect while engaged in company business at the office or offsite.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    • Responsible for engineering, implementing and maintaining clients’ complex network infrastructure
    • Assumes lead role in the Network and Telecommunications Group
    • Design stable and secure network systems using industry best practice
    • Document procedures for network hardware/software configuration and use.
    • Document technical specifications and operating standards for network and telecommunications equipment.
    • Develop and maintain toolsets that monitor network health and performance
    • Generate concise reports on network health, performance and utilization
    • Forecast network technology costs and growth by performing trend analysis and capacity planning using available data sets forecasting models
    • Manage security incidents and perform Root Cause Analysis
    • Manage enterprise routing, switching and wireless devices
    • Manage firewalls, VPN concentrators, IDS/IPS and other security appliances
    • Manage Cloud Networks, Cisco Nexus and Meraki equipment
    • Manage core infrastructure networks at our data centers
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify business requirements for proposed network initiatives and deliver sound technical solutions
    • Work with network administrators and various groups throughout the company to deploy, decommission, or relocate network equipment and devices.
    • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert on network related issues
    • Provide coaching sessions for knowledge transfer in a small group setting
    • Conduct presentation and whiteboard sessions for company executives
    • Document step-by-step procedures to fix known issues, established solutions or processes in the company knowledge base.
    • Engineer solutions to enforce network policies and procedures, assuring users and devices adhere to company security standards.
    • Optimize network performance from the core network to the endpoints
    • Implement network management tools for day to day operations
    • Develop and document network scripts to automate common network tasks

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or Engineering
    • Minimum eight (8) years of experience supporting large multivendor networks, ten (10) years experience is preferred
    • Minimum four (4) years of experience engineering and supporting large multivendor voice and data networks
    • CCIE Certification is desired; CCNA a minimum
    • Experience with large, multi-site enterprise network systems
    • Solid experience designing and implementing virtualized networks
    • Solid experience designing and implementing networks using interior and exterior routing protocols
    • Solid experience designing and implementing IP network delivery services for voice, video and other types of application data
    • Ability to discuss network component capabilities and perform advanced integration with multiple 3rd party products and services.
    • Experience with telecom/data carrier provisioning, billing, and troubleshooting procedures
    • Experience with current best practices in IT standards, principles, and security practices
    • Expert knowledge of core networking concepts including switching, routing, and wireless technologies
    • Expert knowledge of network principles, design, security and implementation
    • Expert knowledge of network security, firewalls, IDS/IPS systems, wireless Access Points
    • Expert knowledge of MPLS, QoS, VPN IPSec and SSL technologies
    • Expert knowledge of TCP/IP, EIGRP, BGP, HSRP and VRRP
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
    • Respond effectively and in a timely manner to sensitive inquiries and complaints.
    • Individual accountability and contributions within a team-based environment
    • Use metrics and establish KPI’s to identify common problems

      10 Major responsibilities: (Primary accountability for specific functions and results)

      1 Work with the Project Manager, other delivery engineers and the customer to coordinate and plan network related services they have been assigned.

      2 Advanced to expert level skill with Cisco LAN switches and Brocade LAN switches with the ability to install, troubleshoot and operate with minimal assistance.  Chassis

      3 Advanced to expert level skills with Cisco Wireless Access Points and Controllers and the ability to perform a survey, install, troubleshoot and operate with minimal assistance.

      4 Advanced to expert level skills with Cisco Security platforms, including ASA and NAC appliances, with the ability to perform security analysis, tune in-place installations, install, troubleshoot and operate with minimal assistance.

      5 Advanced to expert level skills with network protocols, with specific practical experience with Spanning Tree, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS and DCB. 

      6 Advanced to expert level skills with Data Center network design, with particular emphasis around converged networking (FCOE), Top of Rack design concepts, High Availability and reliability.

      7 Advanced level skills with Disaster Recovery concepts, application and testing with particular emphasis regarding connectivity and protocols such as VPLS and OTV.

      8 Advanced level skills in network audit and assessment concepts with particular emphasis around network management, statistics collection and analysis.

      9 Advanced level skills with WAN design in traditional Frame Relay mesh, Hub and Spoke and MPLS networks.  Experience should include Quality of Service, Multicast, issue identification, Carrier relationships and traffic management.

      10 Advanced level skills with Infrastructure concepts regarding DHCP, DNS, ISP uplinks and peering, Multicast, VoIP planning and a basic understanding of Microsoft Active Directory.

      Additional Responsibilities:

      This position will also be responsible for managing, installation and operating our internal network and handling any tickets opened by customers in the hosting environment.

      Education:         

           Bachelor’s degree preferred                

      Experience:       

           5-10 years of working experience in the network field              

      Specialized knowledge

           Experience in a consultative role is preferred.  Advanced level knowledge of Cisco LAN/WAN/Security devices and knowledge of Brocade LAN switches required.  Experience with MS Office applications required.
