IT Job News – The quest for IT talent

That noise you hear is the scrape of chairs being pushed back, laptops snapping shut and your ICT staff walking out the door. The war for talent is on again — if it ever stopped — and as with all wars, there will be victors, survivors and casualties.

Identifying, retaining and developing talent never gets easier. There are only degrees of difficulty. What should you do to attract and groom good people? How can you make your IT organisation one that offers interesting roles and compelling career prospects? How can you avoid becoming collateral damage in the war?

How much it really costs to replace staff

The market is on the move

Now, even worse news.

Peoplebank is Australia’s largest IT&T recruitment company. It claims a talent pool of more than 300,000 candidates and 3000 contractors on-site, and places 6000 candidates every year.

Peoplebank’s National IT Market Update: April 2010 reveals significant salary increases — the first sign of increased competition among employers for IT skills — are beginning to emerge. It supports anecdotal evidence of shrinking talent pools around the country.

IT Staffing – Increased IT Hiring on Horizon, Survey Suggests

Although companies such as HP may be slashing their workforce, a survey finds the majority of HR heads are planning on making IT hires in the next six months.

More than three-quarters (78 percent) of human resources managers or recruiters who have responsibility in recruiting technology positions are looking to hire IT workers in the next six months, according to the 2010 IT Hire Intelligence Survey conducted by Monster.com, an online career and recruitment resource on behalf of technology services provider Technisource. In addition, the majority of survey respondents said they are confident that their company’s performance will improve across the same time period.

Among the key findings, 76 percent of respondents have confidence that their company’s performance will improve in the next six months, while 78 percent of respondents plan to hire IT staff in the next six months. When asked what technology-oriented positions IT hiring managers were looking to fill, applications and infrastructure positions took the lead.

Job Tips and Job News – IT Hiring Jumps in April; Demand Up Sharply for Full-Time Workers

By Patrick Thibodeau on Mon, May 10, 2010

Computerworld — Last week’s U.S. government report showing an increase of 290,000 jobs in April brought some good news to tech workers as there was a sharp increase in IT hiring.

CIO.com’s IT Job Search Bible

Perhaps even more important for tech workers, Dice.com, an IT jobs board, reported a sizable increase in the percentage of opportunities for full-time rather than contract workers.

In terms of the broader numbers, TechServe Alliance , an industry group that tracks month-to-month IT hiring trends, reported Monday that tech employers added 17,300 jobs in April, rebounding from a slight dip in March. Alexandria, Va.-based TechServe said the latest numbers, part of a mostly upward trend that started late last year, are a clear indication that momentum has returned to the technology market.

Foote Partners LLC in Vero Beach, Fla., Monday released a report that supported TechServe Alliance’s analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Foote said its analysis of IT employment saw a net gain of 8,800 jobs in April, representing a swing of nearly 16,000 jobs from March when IT employment dipped by nearly as much.

It’s important to note that that there is no one analysis or set of numbers on the state of IT hiring. The various groups that analyze labor data can pull from different government labor data sets, that can either be broad or more focused on bellwether categories, such as in the case in Foote. But while the approaches may differ, there is usually agreement on the broader trends.

High-Tech Employment Grows

Network World — IT jobs could return to healthier levels in 2010 along with an improved economy, according to the IEEE-USA, which this week reported that employment grew for three high-tech job categories.

10 best IT jobs right now

Based on data released in April from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the IEEE-USA reports that employment for electrical and electronics engineers grew 7.8% in the first quarter of 2010 over the last quarter of 2009. The increase puts employment for this job category more than 16% higher than its “historical low” in the first quarter of 2009, the IEEE-USA states.
