Six in 10 hiring managers and technology recruiters expect to do more hiring in the first half of 2011 than in the previous six months, according to the latest Dice.com report on IT hiring plans.

Second:

Dice surveys human resource managers and recruiters of technology professionals across the U.S. every six months, and its parent company Dice Holdings also conducts surveys, the most recent of which indicates “slow gradual recovery in the labor market,” said Scot Melland, chairman, president and CEO of Dice Holdings, which operates the Dice.com IT and engineering jobs and recruiting services website. Nearly half of the almost 850 respondents in the most recent Dice.com survey say they expect to increase hiring by at least 10 percent in the first half of 2011, with another third expecting increases of 11 percent to 20 percent, and 15 percent forecasting hiring 21 percent to 30 percent more technology workers.

IT Jobs That Need Filling

Even with thousands upon thousands of experienced IT pros looking for work, many information technology executives say they are finding it difficult to find talented workers in several key areas of their organizations. Maybe they’re not trying hard enough, or maybe they’re just looking in the wrong places or maybe there exists a mismatch between available workers and the specific jobs open in today’s marketplace. IT staffing firm Robert Half Technology recently asked the following question of 1,400 IT leaders, from companies with more than 100 employees: “In which functional area is it most challenging to find skilled IT professionals?” The answer was something of a mixed bag and one that leaves many questions about the state of IT hiring.  The execs mentioned a number of specific tasks that are going begging, with spots in networking, security and help desk support taking the top spots. Only a relatively small fraction said they could find all the talent they need. Where are you experiencing problems in the job market?

IT Consulting: IT Contract Work Is Up, Permanent Hiring Slowly Increasing

Technology contractors appear to be seeing the best growth rates in hiring. For high-demand IT architecture and project management jobs, the salary picture is promising.

If you have in-demand skills, your asking price is probably above market rate—even with the slow growth of technology jobs, say hiring managers and recruiters polled in an August survey by online job board Dice.com.

Fifty-one percent of 1,350 IT decision makers polled said they are having to sweeten salaries for highly sought-after tech talent, though about 22 percent of workers are not willing to leave their current jobs. Caution about the economy is still in the air for employers and workers alike. But if you are receiving offers, don’t be afraid to try to get the best salary possible.

“Indeed, money dominates the enticement list, whether it’s higher salaries or sign-on bonuses sometimes necessary to help with relocation,” Tom Silver, senior vice president of Dice, said in a Sept. 8 statement. “But No. 3 on the list might surprise you: flexible work options, including telecommuting.”

The rise of telecommuting is one of those win/win situations for employers and employees alike: Companies get to save on office space costs such as leases, power consumption and insurance, and employees get to stay closer to their families, save on commuting costs and have a bit more hourly flexibility. Plus, employees will more likely start their days earlier thanks to a nonexistent commute.

“Technology jobs with a telecommuting option have doubled on the Dice site year [over] year,” Silver said. “Still, they remain less than 1 percent of the total jobs available. Corporations may want to consider giving more tech employees the option of telecommuting. Not only might such a policy attract and keep talent, it can offer real cost savings, as well.”

Dilemma: IT Staffing Solution- Staff Augmentation (part II)

Here’s a continuation of my previous post about staff augmentation. Another consulting client had a very short term project that required a specific skill set that no one on her staff possessed. The intricacy of the project required that our engineer become part of the IT team and interact regularly with marketing and senior management. Handling that as a fixed priced project would not have worked for us or them. We were able to provide an experienced engineer to become a temporary part of the staff and complete the development in just a few weeks. That engineer had at his disposal our entire team of engineers and project managers to offer advice and guidance as the project progressed. This is another significant advantage to the client. The staff augmenting engineer of a solid integrator has an impressive team on their staff and can access that team at any time. Compare that to a new hire coming into the company. He or she may have contacts from previous jobs, or a network of peers in the industry but it is not the same as having fellow employees who have a strong vested interest in the success of the engagement.

Just as the engineer has an opportunity to bond more closely with the client, a big plus for the integrator, the client gains significant visibility with the integrator. I am a huge fan of tight, loyal, long term relationships between integrators and their clients. It is much better for both businesses in the long term. The very process of staff augmentation goes a long way in strengthening the relationship.

“We interviewed for six months for this position, and then gave this guy six months to prove himself, but he just hasn’t worked out.” a frustrated client explained to me just last week. “Now the head of that team has given her notice, and will be gone in two weeks! It’s just extremely frustrating” she went on to say.

Unfortunately this type of problem is a regular occurrence for small to medium sized businesses trying to build and/or keep their IT staffs intact, happy, and motivated. This recession, which many IT managers had hoped would provide a much needed reprieve from the incredible challenge of finding the right IT talent, has brought little relief. It is just as difficult to recruit and keep exceptional IT talent as it has ever been. There is a solution however, that I have seen work well for many companies willing to think outside the box a bit. I refer to it as “staff augmentation, basically bringing in outside personnel to augment your current staff from time to time”.

You see, there are many solid IT integration companies that have talented IT engineers with a wealth of knowledge of a variety of networking solutions. These are very expensive people to keep on staff. For integrators, keeping these engineers busy on billable projects is crucial to their profitability. Utilizing this talent in staff augmentation roles on a regular basis has many advantages. The first and most obvious is that such an engagement is usually billed by the hour, making the engineer’s billable hours 100% percentage billable100%. The second is that it can provide a degree of stability for the engineer who can report to the same site, with the same hours, for a specific period of time. That can be a welcome break for an engineer who has been all over the map juggling a variety of projects. It also allows the engineer to form much tighter working relationships with key staff at a valuable client. From the integration company’s perspective it can be a real win.

Looking For Honesty and Integrity in Dallas IT Consulting Companies

I was in IT for several years before being laid off a few years ago.  I was laid off right before September 11, 2001 and was working on my MBA in eCommerce at the time.  I found myself in a very difficult situation as many other people did during that time.  Because I was working on my MBA and was almost finished, companies I interviewed with considered me ‘over-qualified’ for most positions I applied and interviewed for.

I stumbled into IT Consulting sales and account management mostly because I wanted to continue to use my IT background for something and what a better way than to find the best people for Dallas IT Client departments and at the same time put people to work.  It seemed to me like the best of both worlds.   Having been a Dallas IT project leader, programmer, and production support engineer, I knew what Dallas IT clients were looking for and the type of people they needed.  Also, having been out of work myself, I loved putting Dallas IT candidates and consultants to work.

My first position was with a company that had provided consultants for the last Dallas IT project team I was on.  The company only had one client and it was my past employer!  When they set up my phone voice mail, the pass code they used was 911.  I was appalled that they would use that pass code considering what had just happen with September 11.  The owner would never tell me what nationality he was, but told me to tell everyone they were an Indian company.

I also later found out that they had consultants that programmed the code of one of the systems I had supported at my former company and had stolen it.  They were selling the system to other companies in the same industry!  I spoke to the IT Development Manager who was over the systems I had supported and she said that although upper IT management knew this company had stolen their code, they were still doing business with them!

Anyway, there is more.  When I started working for this company they only had one client; my past employer!  The CEO gave me a list of clients to “show off” to potential clients.  I mentioned that they only had one client and he said “I know, but this is what I want you to tell the potential clients.”  I told him I would not lie for him or anyone else.  I found that he lied to clients, consultants, candidates, and his own employees all the time.  He lied to his VP of Marketing, and the VP of Marketing would lie to him and ask me to cover his lies.  I told him no way!

I was there for two months before the final straw.  Having never been in a sales role in my life, and in a horrible economy, I made my first placement as an account manager.  I placed a consultant with a Downtown Dallas company.  In violation to our contract, they hired our consultant away.  The CEO of our company became so enraged that he threatened to kill the CEO of the new client company for violating the contract!  The CEO of the client company was totally blind sided because he was not even aware that his manager had hired our consultant away.

I immediately went to the parking lot, called the client CEO and apologized then went back to my office and packed all my stuff.  I decided that I could not work at a company that operated without honesty and integrity and especially a company headed by someone that threatened people’s lives!

Although my first experience with IT Consulting/Recruiting firms was a pretty bad one, I felt like I really found something that I loved to do – find the right fit between Dallas IT Clients and Dallas IT candidates and consultants.  I decided that I would find a company to work for that operated with honesty and integrity.

Will job prospects for U.S. IT professionals fare better or worse for the rest of 2010? It’s hard to tell from the latest economic and employment data being released by IT career experts.

Reports issued in the first week of June provide conflicting information about IT hiring, compensation and outsourcing trends. On the plus side, these reports say IT hiring will increase during the second half of 2010, and CIOs are more optimistic about their budgets and staffing levels than they were a year ago. However, IT salaries and benefits are still being squeezed from all sides, and it’s difficult to tell which IT skills are most in demand on a month-to-month basis.

“There’s more volatility in the market than at any point in time since we started tracking IT pay data in 1999,” says David Foote, CEO of Foote Partners, a consulting firm.

As evidence of the volatility, Foote points to the May 2010 U.S. Department of Labor National Employment Report, which showed a net loss of 100 IT-related jobs in May, following a gain of 8,800 jobs in April. Foote has been tracking ups and downs in employment in five key job categories – IT services, computer systems design, data processing, computer/peripheral equipment, and communications equipment – for the past six months.

IT Staffing – CIOs Finally Ready to Start Hiring Again

After years of penny pinching and putting off key software and hardware implementations, IT executives now say they’re ready to start hiring again.

It was the worst of times these past three, four years and IT workers suffered as much as more as most. While companies across all industries were busy pink-slipping millions of workers, shuttering facilities and abandoning all non-essentially IT projects, it was the networking, software and security specialists who were out of work and largely out of luck.

But as CIO Update found, those days appear to be over as the vast majority of some 1,400 CIOs surveyed say they’re adding headcount and are feeling far more optimistic about their company’s future than they have in years.

According to survey by headhunter Robert Half International, 64 percent of CIOs blamed understaffing in their company’s IT department for impairing their ability to implement innovative or emerging technologies.

To turn things around and build out computing environments in the cloud or to update ancient installed hardware and software platforms, CIOs will have to not only begin hiring more networking and cloud-computing specialists, but pay them handsomely to keep competitors from luring them away.

It’s not the exactly 1999 again, but CIOs are starting to see some blue sky on the horizon and that means good things for IT workers across the board.
