Job Tips and Job News – IT Hiring Jumps in April; Demand Up Sharply for Full-Time Workers

By Patrick Thibodeau on Mon, May 10, 2010

Computerworld — Last week’s U.S. government report showing an increase of 290,000 jobs in April brought some good news to tech workers as there was a sharp increase in IT hiring.

CIO.com’s IT Job Search Bible

Perhaps even more important for tech workers, Dice.com, an IT jobs board, reported a sizable increase in the percentage of opportunities for full-time rather than contract workers.

In terms of the broader numbers, TechServe Alliance , an industry group that tracks month-to-month IT hiring trends, reported Monday that tech employers added 17,300 jobs in April, rebounding from a slight dip in March. Alexandria, Va.-based TechServe said the latest numbers, part of a mostly upward trend that started late last year, are a clear indication that momentum has returned to the technology market.

Foote Partners LLC in Vero Beach, Fla., Monday released a report that supported TechServe Alliance’s analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Foote said its analysis of IT employment saw a net gain of 8,800 jobs in April, representing a swing of nearly 16,000 jobs from March when IT employment dipped by nearly as much.

It’s important to note that that there is no one analysis or set of numbers on the state of IT hiring. The various groups that analyze labor data can pull from different government labor data sets, that can either be broad or more focused on bellwether categories, such as in the case in Foote. But while the approaches may differ, there is usually agreement on the broader trends.

IT Outsourcing: 3 Reasons Your Vendor Won’t Innovate

Once you’ve figured out what innovation means to you, seek out providers that line up with your definition

Internal IT organizations choose to outsource for any number of reasons: to cut costs, improve service, increase efficiency. Increasingly, they’re seeking innovation from their IT outsourcing partners, even though many don’t have a clear picture of what innovation means in the context of outsourcing. Consequently, those IT departments are not getting much innovation from their service providers.

According to a 2009 Forrester Research survey, 38 percent of IT outsourcing customers said lack of innovation or continuous improvement was their greatest challenge with existing vendors–up from 33 percent the previous year. (Also see CIO’s Exclusive Outsourcing and Innovation Survey.)

"Clients expect more from their service providers than just a cost reduction and reliable service," says Forrester Senior Analyst Chris Andrews. "In many cases they want their supplier to be aligned with their own business concerns, and that implies some level of evolution in the supplier’s capabilities."

Leading IT outsourcing providers recognize that innovation is integral to their survival. "None of the service providers I have ever spoken with is unwilling to engage in an innovation discussion," says Andrews, who recently interviewed ten technology service providers to figure out the disconnect between customer expectations for and outsourcer delivery of innovation.

So what’s the problem? In a word–it’s you. Andrews says IT outsourcing customers make the following three seemingly basic, yet critical mistakes in attempting to procure innovation from their external partners. He recommends ways they can address these mistakes to obtain the innovation they seek from their vendors.

Job Tips and Job News – Why Job Searches Should Start-But Not End-On the Web

Simmi Singh, a public-relations veteran, joined the mushrooming ranks of the unemployed in January 2009. Armed with nearly a decade of experience in her field, Singh was confident that finding a new job would be as simple as a few clicks of a mouse. She devoted nearly all of her time and energy to scouring online job

boards, but after a year of trolling seemingly every crevice of the Web and applying for more than 400 PR and marketing jobs

, she remained jobless. "I know we’re in a downturn, but good people usually find a good job," Singh laments. "To find out that no one will even talk to you is really frustrating."

Job Tips and Job News – 5 Resume Basics We Bet You’ve Overlooked!

May 6, 2010 by sparktalk

By CAREEREALISM-Approved Expert, Jessica Holbrook Hernandez

Five basic résumé rules and the mistakes you make that break them. Thousands of job seekers make these mistakes. Are you making them too?

FORGETTING TO INCLUDE A COVER LETTER

Not attaching a cover letter to a résumé is like shooting in the dark. Hiring managers receive hundreds of unsolicited résumés every week. Tell them specifically what opening you are applying to or the position you’re inquiring about. Do not presume they will figure it out from your résumé.

Job Tips – Can social media help you get hired faster? YES, if you use it the right way.

Social Media Can Get You HIRED

Can social media help you get hired faster? YES, if you use it the right way.

Laura Gainor did. In March, Laura Gainor saw a job posting on Twitter for a position at Comet Branding in Milwaukee, WI. Based on the ad, Gainor launched a social media campaign, which landed her the gig in less than 30 days.

Gainor identified the company, did her research, and launched her campaign based on what she learned about the organization. She used all elements of social media to make her pitch as to why she was the best candidate for the role – and it worked.

Recruiter Todd Nilson (Twitter Handle: @talentline411) regularly posts job openings on Twitter. When asked if it works, he said (via Twitter), “So far so good. I get some kind people RTing [retweeting] me. Slightly better luck from LinkedIn updates, though.”

Probably because Nilson has an extensive LinkedIn network. As do I. Because my connections are connections I know personally, I am very comfortable in referring them to others. However, I’ve got to be asked in the right way.

Dallas IT News – Security expert Bruce Schneier says at Dallas cybsecurity conference that data is the pollution of the Information Age

During a panel discussion at the Worldwide Cybersecurity Summit in Dallas yesterday afternoon that otherwise was as dry as a highway in the Sahara, security guru Bruce Schneier made a provocative argument.

He contended that just as pollution was the unfortunate byproduct of the Industrial Revolution, data is the waste product of the digital revolution.

And just like pollution, all the data we generate during our lives never degrades.

He noted that almost every transaction and interaction now generates data.

Job Tips and Job News – 10 Jobs That Pay Beginners Well

Not all incomes are equal. A surgeon, a retail clerk and a high school teacher don’t earn the same amount. Even within each occupation, salaries vary based on experience, training and location.

One expectation that many people have is that workers new to the professional world won’t make much money. Consider the stereotype that new college graduates have to move back in with their parents because they can’t afford to support themselves. The stereotype isn’t entirely unfounded. Walk into the apartments of most 20-somethings and you’ll see bare walls and furniture that was probably passed down from someone else. Tight budgets are just a part of starting your professional life.

As with all things, there are exceptions. Not every new worker is trying to earn enough to pay the bills. Some fresh-faced workers earn more than most Americans ever will.
