Contract Unix Engineer Opportunity in Carrollton, TX

The Unix Engineer position is primarily responsible for projects and duties pertaining to the architecting, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, management, security, monitoring, analysis, reporting and upgrading of the server system operating systems, system hardware, storage, backup and recovery, load-balancing and other related technologies. In addition, the position works in a professional manner providing final tier level escalation and direct customer support.


  • Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Configuration, administration, maintenance, and secure Unix/Linux operating systems to provide optimum performance, protection and availability to meet business needs.
    • Veritas NetBackup, SAN Storage Experience, Data Domain, Hitachi, Nimble, Brocade switches
    • Knowledgeable in troubleshooting day to day SAN/Storage and host related issues
    • Web services, Apache and Java Tomcat
    • VMware ESXI server and client administration
    • Red Hat Satellite systems-management
    • Monitoring standards, appropriate thresholds, and synthetic transaction monitoring as appropriate for different systems and business services utilizing DynaTrace, Nagios, etc.
    • Architect and implement solutions to address complicated infrastructure, application and overall challenges around performance, availability, scalability, and security.
    • Provide ownership level support and accountability for responsible area with the ability to work with IT staff, business units and all management levels.
    • Provide professional technical advice, training, and technical support as situations occur, through direct, over the phone and through written situations.
    • Self-motivator that manages and prioritizes multiple tasks and project timelines.
    • Manage and adapt procedures, processes, documentation, work flow and other duties as necessary and as scope of objectives, standards, compliancy, and business requirements change, aligning to best practices and standards.
    • Develop solutions to complex problems which require the use of ingenuity and creativity.
    • Responsible to ensure service levels, compliance requirements and other requirements for responsible area.
    • Able to work with team and management to determine strategies, standards, priorities, provide capacity planning and to keep area of responsibility current with evolving technologies, best practices, trends and cost optimization.
    • Expected to carry a business provided cell phone at all times.
    • Perform 24×7 on-call support rotation.
    • Flexibility to adjust hours for outages, perform overtime and weekend support as needed.
    • All other duties as needed or required.
  • Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years experience in the IT Industry
  • 3+ years familiarity with Java, REST services and web technologies with Cloud technologies preferred
  • Experience in environments containing Couchbase, JBoss, Apache, Resin, Tomcat and similar systems
  • 5+ Years supporting Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Preferred)
  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite server preferred
  • Experience with Red Hat IPA server preferred
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Dynatrace One Agent, Dynatrace Synthetics, Nagios, Nagios Log Server, ELK and Cloud Watch are preferred.
  • Experience with network technologies such as DNS, Routing, and Subnets
  • Experience working with edge suites such as Akamai preferred
  • Experience working in an Agile, Dev-Ops Environment
  • Professional and strong technical and business communication skills, both verbal and written, with a very strong commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff, along with able to clearly convey technical concepts to non-technical individuals.
  • Must be extremely resourceful, able to work independently or part of a cross-functional team, with a committed desire and completely comfortable working in a multi-tasking, fast pace progressive environment with changing needs, multiple priorities and requirements, and able to prioritize workloads.
  • Motivated to work with limited direction toward predefined objectives and independently determine the correct approach.
  • Must possess very good analytical and problem-solving skills.
